10 tips to help prevent fraud
Starting today, practice these 10 tips to avoid falling victim to fraud:
- Don't do anything urgently. Fraudulent individuals pressure you into believing that their request is urgent and must happen immediately, no matter what.
- Know what fraud looks like. Review the article about common types of fraud, and stay informed about how fraudulent individuals are trying to trick people.
- Follow established processes. Don't let fraudulent individuals convince you to bypass processes due to urgency.
- Evaluate the email or text message closely. Check for typos or errors in names, websites, email addresses, and messages. If you received a phone call, consider whether it sounded authentic.
- Contact the person or organization through another established channel if something feels suspicious. For example, if you receive an email, call them before doing anything.
- If you're sent a link, don't open it. Instead, open a new tab or window and find the website on your own. Then, check that the website addresses match.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-factor authentication (2FA). Turning on MFA and 2FA is like adding a second lock to your door. The key is often a one-time password texted to you or a code from a secure app. While MFA and 2FA add an extra step to logging in, they increase online safety significantly.
- Protect your login information. Use unique passwords and passcodes every time. Store them in a secure password manager. Pairing password hygiene with MFA or 2FA keeps your information much safer.
- Never share login information using insecure channels, like text messages or emails. If you need to share login information with someone you trust, use your password manager's built-in sharing feature.
- Keep the software on your computers, phones, and other devices up to date. Software providers regularly improve their built-in safety measures, so make sure to take the time to install updates.
